Megan Stromness
Welcome to my website! Let me introduce myself. I started on my journey into this profession in 2010 when I randomly decided to take a sign language class at my high school. That once random decision led me to falling in love with American Sign Language (ASL) and the Deaf community.

After high school I served a religious mission for 18 months where I primarily worked in a deaf congregation. That time of my life was when I truly learned what the Deaf culture was all about. In 2016 I started my education at Utah Valley University. I will be graduating with a Bachelors of Arts in Deaf Studies and an Emphasis in Interpreting in May 2019.

I have had Utah's novice certification since November 2017. I hope to be professionally certified by May 2019. Then, I will be practicing my skills and working towards national certification in the next few years. I'm so grateful for this opportunity to be an interpreter. I hope to do the best I can at being a support and ally to the deaf community for many years to come!

Skills
Throughout my experience involved in the deaf community, school, and in the interpreting profession I have gained various skills. Some of these include: English to ASL interpretation, English to English-bound transliteration, sign to voice interpreting, team cooperation, time management, and adaptability in various settings.

In addition, part of my education at Utah Valley University included extensive training on the RID Code of Professional Conduct and how to make ethical decisions in interpreting situations. See the link below for examples of real life situations where I have applied this knowledge.

November 2017 - Current
Freelance Interpreter
As a freelance interpreter I work with two referral agencies: 5-star and ASL Communications. These agencies coordinate the assignments I go to all throughout Utah. These assignments are in various settings such as: university, K - 12, community, religious, and simple medical settings.
March 2018 - Current
Post-Secondary Interpreter
I am a part-time employee at Brigham Young University. Each semester I am assigned classes of various subjects to interpret. This has been such a rewarding place to work! I have the opportunity to get to know and work with many members of the Deaf and interpreting communities.
